I don’t disagree with the general point being made here. I don’t fully agree with the sweeping generalizations being made about all “privileged caucasian’s” either. Because they are just that “sweeping generalized statements” not based by actual statistics. I am not disagreeing with you. I only can speak personally for myself but I get a bit defensive at being essentially called privileged or being associated with racism because of my ancestors history that I cannot go back and undue. Believe me if I could, I would. I can, however, do, what I do now. That is by, not being ignorant and unaware of what’s going on. For example, I make a full on effort to buy clothes made by home grown companies, not big manufacturers, who use slave labour. I buy 90% of my groceries from local farmers, with the exception of those things I can’t get from local farmers. So I know that they’re not being produced, again, because of slave labour and it also adds some nutritious benefits because I’m planing, preparing and cooking my own meals from scratch. I use as little coal produced energy as I possibly can by taking the bus when I don’t require my car for my work. I don’t seek employment from companies that I know employ racist policies. In fact I am self employed in some manners, choosing to use my degree’s and knowledge to give back to children with disabilities with the aim to enable them to reach their fullest potential. I work very hard to be aware of prejudices and to raise awareness about them by participating in debate and open dialogue with my parents and other I come across. This all being said, I cannot deny that I haven’t benefited in some capacity from the oppression of all various people, however, at the same time I have also been afflicted by it as well. A white, middle class, male does not get a whole lot of sympathy in today’s world because of the oppression my ancestor’s caused. I’m thinking specifically of the education I received that which I am certain came at the expense sometime in our history as a result of the oppression of different populations. However, don’t think for one minute that this doesn’t work in reverse. Try being a single white male with parents who have enough means to help you out but not enough to support you becoming independent by yourself. Try to get student aide and support when you’re not considered a female, an aboriginal (in my case Canadian), or a foreign student. It’s near impossible. So having gone through two degrees now and made a life for myself by being conscious of the oppression of different populations I have become aware of the lasting effects of it and I personally have made efforts not to support it, endorse it and to help bring it to an end. What have you done?  You sit here on your high horse explaining how we’ve been privileged and benefited from the oppression of Africans. Have you done anything about it? Or do you just prefer to write about it, while continuing to allow and support said practices? Yes, Indeed you make a good points and it doesn’t hurt for a few white people to open their eyes to it. But, if you’re aware of it and only opening people’s eyes through blogging on the internet instead of taking action by trying to improve the lives of the oppressed does that not make you complicit in the oppression especially if you financially support it.

I know you’re really excited about me providing my white liberal credentials for you to see so that you can justify white tears but I think maybe you should take a minute and really think about why you believe it is important for you to have any sympathy for being white affluent male. The entire society you live in is geared towards helping you succeed at the cost of those who aren’t white or male. It is really awesome that you are making efforts in your personal consumption and employment not to support racist aspects of your culture, but when you weasel in sentiments about how difficult it is to be the very definition of the ruling class in the same breath as ‘acknowledging’ that you benefit from it? That’s poison and contributes to a very toxic need for white people to believe that ‘reverse racism’ (does not exist!) is causing them any sort of institutionalized harm. It isn’t.
